The semi-famous Lake Tekapo lupins -. Just a quick online search will show some stunning photographs - often full of weddings couples - here is where I come in!

Every summer, the South Island of New Zealand becomes a colourful wonderland with lupins in shades of blue, purple, pink, orange, yellow, and white. 

If you want to catch the lupins in full bloom at Tekapo, the best time to see them is between mid-November and late December. Late November to mid-December offer the most vibrant displays. 

Lupins in NZ
Lupins bloom across Tekapo, Twizel, Lake Pukaki, and the Lindis Pass. Lupin seeds were originally spread on farms in the Mackenzie Country to help fertilise the soil for grazing animals. However, they spread quickly and have started to grow along riverbeds, which has caused problems for local wildlife.

The dense clumps of lupins can hide predators and destroy habitats for birds. There has been a battle going on for years from the council with lupins; over the years, some lupin areas in the Mackenzie District have been smaller, but Lake Tekapo had a fabulous 2024 season with numerous lupins around still early January.

* The photography quote listed is for a one-hour weekday photography session. Photographers are available for extended coverage of up to 10 hours. For 2 hour plus packages can travel to multiple locations, including helicopter-accessible mountain destinations. Travel price will be included in quote
